All organizations share a common imperative to execute effectively and efficiently to achieve their strategic and organizational plans. They may deliver different products or services. They may be organized for profit or non-profit. They may serve radically different markets--but all organizations only create value when they execute.

Confronted with unacceptable organizational performance or significant new threats from the external environment, Boards and CEOs typically deal with the need to respond by changing:

1. People (The shortening tenure for executives and senior management)
2. Strategy (The revolving door of strategic consultants)
3. Organizational design (When in doubt, reorganize)
4. Key business initiatives (New products or services, new markets, new approaches)

In most cases the source of the organization's disappointing performance is its failure to execute, not these four factors that are more directly controllable by the Board or senior management. The single most important factor to enable an organization to sustainably and consistently achieve its objectives is a high capability of execution.

Senior leaders must ensure that most individuals, whether their enterprise consists of several hundred, several thousand or several hundred thousand individuals, can simultaneously execute their individual responsibilities in order to fulfill the mission of their organization. Successful execution requires the voluntary adoption by all essential employees of the key actions and behaviors necessary for the full implementation of both the design for the organization and the chosen key management initiatives. While strategy is established at the top of the organization, this voluntary adoption of the key actions and behaviors by employees throughout the organization cannot be mandated - it must be led.
