You Can Accelerate Execution AND Increase Employee Loyalty

George B. Weathersby

Chairman & CEO, Genesys Solutions, LLC

The passing of Peter Drucker last Friday calls to mind the wit and wisdom he so generously dispensed.  One of the many radical thoughts he advocated almost 60 years ago in “The Concept of the Corporation” was that corporate leaders could only achieve sustainable profits, not by exploiting their employees, but by engaging employees as valuable resources.  The false perception of a trade-off of delighting shareholders or delighting employees is still prevalent today.

Fortunately, the evidence is that with effective leadership even large complex organizations can achieve accelerated, broad-based execution of their key initiatives and increased employee loyalty and satisfaction - without requiring substantial new resources.

Recently, the Partnership for Public Service (PPS) and American University's Institute for the Study of Public Policy Implementation (ISPPI) completed their 2005 Best Places to Work ratings for the US Federal Government, and reported their results on www.bestplacestowork.org. They also reported the numerical changes in their ratings from their 2004 levels for almost 200 agencies and departments, several of which are clients of Genesys Solutions LLC.

Compared with high performing private corporations, the authors report that federal agencies have significantly lower scores in four areas: performance of immediate supervisors, recognition for a job well done, fairly resolving disputes, and reward for providing high quality goods and services. Two of these areas are key factors of organizational alignment and two are among the five key elements in the Genesys SCORE™ execution analysis.

Among all large federal agencies, the greatest increase in employee satisfaction from 2004 to 2005 and the highest reported level of employee satisfaction in 2005 were reported in the US Navy's Naval Sea Systems Command. These results were achieved despite the fact that the entire Command was in the midst of a major transformation announced 1 October 2003.

Genesys has been proud to be a part of the NAVSEA transformational efforts and measured the extent of organizational alignment and their ability to execute their key initiatives in November 2003 and again in October 2004. Major units within NAVSEA used these Genesys results to achieve both their business objectives and their organizational and employee objectives.

This recent independent analysis of federal agencies and private corporations confirmed the significance of the factors employed in the Genesys organizational measurement instruments. It also independently documented the organizational success that was achieved by senior leaders informed by the Genesys results.

Just as importantly, the PPS/ISPPI analysis documented that the same organization can within the span of a single year dramatically improve the loyalty and satisfaction of its employees while simultaneously implementing both a dramatic organizational restructuring and a series of new leadership initiatives - without additional resources. In fact, in many areas NAVSEA was undergoing ongoing reductions in staff and resources.

If these kinds of results would make a difference in your enterprise, we'd like to talk with you. You can lead real change and improve employee satisfaction and drive execution - all with the resources and workforce you have available today.
